Product Story:
One of my all time favourite finds. It takes all my self control not to keep these for myself. These were listed at an estate sale and unbelievably had no bidders. I believe it's because they were in a pile of serving ware and their beauty was hidden, but I could spot them from a mile away.
The back stamp on these tells an amazing story "Australian Design, Registration Applied For," a mark Carlton Ware used in the late 1930s, while the pattern's registration was still working its way through the paperwork. Carlton Ware has been making its cheerful embossed pottery in Stoke-on-Trent — England's pottery heartland — since 1890.
A set of four salad plates in Carlton Ware's Poppy pattern — two in soft pink, two in buttery yellow — each a single open bloom with hand-painted petals radiating from a detailed centre. Nearly ninety years old and, remarkably, without a single chip or line of crazing — a small miracle for earthenware this age. Bring them out for a summer luncheon, a slice of coffee cake with good friend, or any meal on your patio.
